November is CWL Membership Month

Perhaps it’s time to consider the benefits of a membership — For God and Canada

The Catholic Women’s League is an extremely diversified Canada-wide, Catholic, women’s organization.  Each member has the opportunity to be involved in one or more activities as suits their personal interests and their time commitments.  The League is active on four distinct levels: the Parish Councils, the Diocesan Councils, the Provincial Councils and the National Executive.  Within these Councils each League activity is designated to one of three Standing Committees: Faith, Service or Social Justice.  The Catholic Women’s League is most often associated with: sponsoring Spiritual Development Days; organizing Christmas Bazaars; providing fellowship lunches following funerals; donating generously to Catholic school bursaries and to Catholic Charities.  However, there is one very important League activity that can be overlooked and this is known as “Resolutions” and it falls under the “Social Justice Standing Committee”.

“Resolutions” simply means advocating the Federal Government for societal changes in keeping with our Catholic Faith.  A resolution is initiated at the Parish Council level; this process involves a very intricate, detailed crafting and wording on a chosen topic.  This must then be passed at the Diocesan and the Provincial levels and finally at the National level.  Once approved, a League Delegation travels to Ottawa to meet with various members of Parliament and to present the Resolution.  Over the years various Resolutions from Parish CWL councils across Canada have included topics such as: upholding the life and dignity of the human person; upholding the dignity of work and the equal rights of workers; speaking against the evils of human trafficking; care for God’s creation.  This year, we are very proud to announce that our CWL Council here at the Basilica was successful in having the following Resolution passed:

RESOLUTION: Exclude Advance Requests for Medical Assistance in Dying

RESOLVED: that the National Council of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada in the 106th National Annual Meeting of members assembled opposes all forms of medical assistance in dying and urges the Federal government to exclude advance requests for medical assistance in dying (MaiD).

 In the News, Media, News Releases The delegation was able to attend question period in the House of Commons as guests of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada The Hon. Sean Fraser (Central Nova Scotia).  Following question period, the delegation met with the Minister to discuss some of the League’s resolutions.  The League delegation was honoured and pleased to be able to bring the resolutions from members to cabinet ministers and officials in government
