The Permanent Diaconate has always been understood as an order of Service in the mission of the Church. Rooted in Baptism, Deacons are irrevocably configured to Christ and act as Christ the Servant. Permanent Deacons have been serving the Hamilton Diocese since 2006. The heart of the Diaconate is the ministry of Charity. Ministries of Charity consist of service in hospitals or nursing homes, prisons, homeless shelters and other outreach programs. Each Deacon is assigned to a parish where he performs his liturgical ministry. The Deacon reads the Gospel at Mass, occasionally preaches the homily, administers Baptism outside of Mass, and presides at liturgies outside of Mass such as marriages, funeral wakes and burials. Deacons can be married men. Wives of Deacons play a fundamental role in the formation and ministry of the Deacon.
