The gifts which our infinitely good Father lavished upon our first parents were threefold: natural, preternatural and supernatural. The natural gifts are body and soul made in the image and likeness of God. Our body and soul form a single human being. The body which our Creator gave us was a marvelous thing, worthy of reverence. Its perfections show the wisdom and power of our Creator. The likeness of God reflected in us is imaged in our soul and our powers of free will and intellect, the power of reason and free choice which makes us human and raises us above the animals.
The preternatural gifts given to Adam and Eve were “immortality”. Adam and Eve were destined never to know death as God intended them to live happily on this earth and then be admitted into His presence. There was the gift of “impassibility” or freedom from suffering, fatigue or sickness. The gift of “integrity” was given to our first parents so there would be no disorderly bodily temptations. God granted the gift of “happiness” enabling them to grow physically, mentally and spiritually and find dignity and nobility in work. God created Adam and Eve with “infused knowledge”, ideas were poured directly into their intellect so they automatically had knowledge and understanding.
