Like the Emmaus disciples we all have events in the past that have left us sad or feeling betrayed. The memories of such events can cloud our vision for the future. Some may be minor and last a day or so while others can linger for years. The Emmaus story shows us that no matter how bleak the past may seem, Jesus can help us and He will walk with us as we pour out our hearts to Him. He can heal our painful memories and restore our sense of hope. If you want to experience this kind of healing, invite Jesus into your past and look at it together. Perhaps someone hurt you in such a way that you become anxious and fearful or cynical and resentful. Ask Jesus to help you. Tell Him how you are hurting and how it is affecting you so that He can take away your pain. Don’t worry if there are extended moments of silence, just sit in the Lord’s presence. Perhaps He will speak words of advice to you or put His arms around you or show you that He feels your pain and wants to help you forgive whoever hurt you. It can take time for one to open their heart enough to let Jesus in. If you trust in Jesus over time the pain of the past will fade and your heart will become lighter. You will see there is reason for hope, for the Risen Lord will never abandon you.
