R.C.I.A. stands for the “Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.” R.C.I.A.’s primary purpose is the initiation of the unbaptized adults, but it is also useful for converts who were baptized in other Christian communities and also for baptized, but uncatechised Catholics. This rite is a process for transformation. The formulation process extends through several periods and is articulated by various liturgical rites throughout the year. The four periods in this process are as follows:
1/ Inquiry by the candidate and evangelization, and the pre-catechumenate on the part of the church. It ends with entrance into the order of catechumens.
2./ This is the period of catechesis (teaching the truths of the faith).
3./ The Lenten preparation for Easter – a time of purification and enlightenment leading up to the Easter vigil.
4./ The whole Easter season and post-baptismal catechesis or “mystagogia”. It is a time for deepening the Christian experience, for gaining spiritual fruit and for entering more closely into the life and unity of the community of faith.
Basic to this whole process is a theology of the Church as a paschal community. R.C.I.A. spells out the various ministries which come into play. What is done with the converts is not simply the priest’s problem or responsibility. It is the concern and business of all the baptized. Being a sponsor or Godparent is far more demanding than placing a hand on the shoulder on the day of baptism. To remodel one’s life after Christ is the spirit of R.C.I.A. If you are interested in becoming part of this process please register or call the parish office for our September program.
